(NewsNation) — Sean “Diddy” Combs attorney Mark Geragos believes President Donald Trump and the rap mogul have similar experiences of legal persecution.
In turn, Geragos told “Elizabeth Vargas Reports” that if a pardon occurred, it would be somewhat influenced by a “resonance” between the pair.
Both victims of justice system: Geragos
A White House official said Tuesday that the president is not considering a pardon despite reports from TMZ.
“If there is any kind of pardon or commutation in the works, I think it’s it’s probably more a product of the president understanding that Sean, like the president, they both share, or it resonates that New York prosecutors came after him and weaponized the legal system,” Geragos said.
“I don’t want to call it a kumbaya, but there’s certainly a resonance or a similarity between the two.”
Combs asked Trump for pardon
Earlier this month, Trump confirmed Combs had asked for a pardon. Geragos refused to share the means by which his client reached out to the president.
“I’m not going to betray exactly how, but I know that there has been that communication, and I know that obviously Sean would welcome a commutation or a pardon,” Geragos told NewsNation.
“The government took a swing, a big swing, at him, and basically tried to take his entire fortune and net worth and the rest of his life, and they lost. And I think that the 50-month sentence was punitive.”
Diddy has ‘tough days’ in prison
The Daily Mail reported that Combs had a knife pressed against his neck by a fellow inmate and “was seconds from death.”
Geragos noted that it was in sentencing paperwork he had previously seen, and “these are the things that happen in a prison facility.”
He added Combs “has tough days, like everybody else, [but] he’ll get through it.”
