(NewsNation) — Guillermo del Toro is making his stance on generative AI clear: He’d “rather die” than use it in his films.
“AI, particularly generative AI — I am not interested, nor will I ever be interested,” he told NPR in an interview.
In a nod to his own work, the Academy Award-winning director compared the technology to the “arrogance” displayed by Oscar Isaac’s titular mad scientist in the director’s Netflix adaptation of “Frankenstein.”

“He’s kind of blind, creating something without considering the consequences, and I think we have to take a pause and consider where we’re going,” the “Pan’s Labyrinth” director said.
He said he isn’t worried about artificial intelligence but “natural stupidity,” saying it “drives most of the world’s worst features.”
“I’m 61, and I hope to be able to remain uninterested in using it at all until I croak,” Del Toro said. “The other day, somebody wrote me an email, said, ‘What is your stance on AI?’ And my answer was very short. I said, ‘I’d rather die.’”
Del Toro made it clear how he felt about artificial intelligence last week at a New York City screening of “Frankenstein” when he yelled out “F**k AI!” while leaving the stage.
