(NewsNation) — Elections across the United States on Tuesday were expected to have a national impact as voters in New Jersey and Virginia elected new governors in Democratic-leaning California, where residents were asked to allow a mid-decade remap of congressional districts.
These marquee contests and others were seen as bellwethers early in the second term of Republican President Donald Trump, who has aggressively sought to remake the federal government with a GOP-controlled Congress that is mostly in lockstep behind him.
Trump has also sought to put his thumb on the scale in his native New York City by endorsing independent mayoral candidate Andrew Cuomo, a former Democratic governor of New York, over front-running democratic socialist Zohran Mamdani and Republican Curtis Sliwa.
Mamdani so far has struck a chord among city voters with proposals that he says would make the nation’s most populous city more affordable for ordinary residents; Trump has labeled him a communist who would be disastrous for the Big Apple.
Polls are open until 9 p.m. in New York City.
