(NewsNation) — President Donald Trump told reporters he hopes his administration will win the Supreme Court case over his tariffs but declined to discuss his plans in the event he loses.
“I think it’s one of the most important cases in the history of our country, so much revolves around tariffs as a defensive mechanism for our country, as national security for our country,” Trump said Thursday.
Trump touted his tariffs as a key factor in making trade deals with other countries and said it would be devastating if they were overturned.
He emphasized the need for the executive branch to be able to enact tariffs quickly without relying on Congress and emphasized how much money has been taken in.
“If you take a look at the numbers, we have $17 trillion right now. We’re going to be at $21 trillion by the time I finish my first year,” Trump said.
The president also said the tariffs are vital for national defense and continued to state his opinion that other countries had been taking advantage of the U.S. with tariffs.
“They were doing it to us until I came along. Now they don’t do it to us. We do it to them a little bit, but if they took this away, we would be defenseless against tariffs from other countries,” Trump said.
