Sydney Sweeney’s ‘Christy’ opens to disappointing box office debut

(NewsNation) — Sydney Sweeney’s latest movie did not make waves this past weekend, earning one of the year’s lowest box office openings.  

“Christy” earned $1.3 million at the domestic box office, according to Box Office Mojo.  

The movie, where Sweeney plays Hall of Fame boxer Christy Martin, opened in 2,011 theaters, with a theater average of $649, which according to Box Office Mojo, makes it one of the worst openings for a movie with over 2,000 screens.  

Sydney Sweeney’s indie film ‘Americana’ opens low 

In August, “Americana,” an indie film starring Sweeney, underwhelmed at the domestic box office, opening in 16th place and earning $500,000 in its opening weekend.  

Despite the film’s seemingly low box office numbers, the film was never expected to open with a large or mid-sized box office because of its indie status.   

“Americana” is expected to be profitable for Lionsgate’s Premiere Releasing label, according to Deadline.   

Sydney Sweeney’s ‘genes’ controversy 

The “Euphoria” actress’ box office flops come after controversy over her American Eagle campaign, which critics said promoted the idea that white beauty standards were superior to others.  

The fall campaign features the “Euphoria” actress in head-to-toe denim, standing beside a billboard that reads “Sydney Sweeney Has Great Genes.” She crosses out “genes” and replaces it with “jeans,” highlighting the brand’s signature denim.   

In response to the controversy, the “Anyone But You” star told GQ Magazine she never made a statement explaining or defending the ad when it was at the height of its backlash because “I’ve always believed that I’m not here to tell people what to think.” 

“I did a jean ad. I mean, the reaction definitely was a surprise, but I love jeans. All I wear are jeans. I’m literally in jeans and a T-shirt every day of my life,” Sweeney said. “I knew at the end of the day what that ad was for, and it was great jeans, it didn’t affect me one way or the other.”
